About Encrypt Pad

EncryptPad is a text editor and binary file encryptor that uses the OpenPGP format (RFC 4880). Its main focus is symmetric encryption: files can be protected with a passphrase, a randomly generated key file, or both, and are saved encrypted, compressed and integrity protected. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and offers both a graphical editor and a command line interface (encryptcli). Files use the OpenPGP format, so they can be interchanged with other tools that implement it, such as gpg, and large multi-gigabyte files are supported.

Key features

  • Symmetric encryption using a passphrase, a key file, or both
  • Random key file generator with a key repository in the home folder
  • Encrypts binary files such as images, videos and archives
  • Graphical editor plus the encryptcli command line interface
  • FakeVim editing mode and read-only mode to prevent accidental changes
  • Selectable ciphers, hash algorithms, compression methods and ASCII armor
Best for: People who need to store or edit sensitive text and binary files on media they do not fully control, and who want password-based or key-file-based protection.
Good for
  • Runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, and can be carried on a memory stick or network drive for portable use
  • OpenPGP file format allows files to be opened and created with other tools implementing the standard
  • Files can be protected by a passphrase and a randomly generated key file together
Watch out for
  • Primary focus is symmetric encryption rather than asymmetric encryption
  • Integrity protection uses SHA-1
