About IPFS Companion

IPFS Companion is an open-source browser extension that connects a Chromium-based or Firefox browser to a local IPFS Kubo node, run either through the IPFS Desktop app or the command-line daemon. It detects IPFS-like paths such as /ipfs/{cid} and /ipns/{peer ID}, detects DNSLink-enabled websites, and redirects those requests to the user's local gateway. The gateway automatically switches to a subdomain form to give each website a unique origin, and DNSLink lookups run in the background and are cached so they do not slow browsing.

Redirects can be suspended and re-enabled globally or per site, and DNSLink detection can be turned off in Preferences. A local IPFS node is required for the extension's redirect behavior. The project states there is no dedicated maintainer at the moment; the Shipyard team maintained it in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and that IPFS maintenance work ended on September 30, 2026, with support and transition questions directed to the community forum.
