About Map History

Map History was an index and gateway to resources on the history of cartography, maintained by Tony Campbell, a former Map Librarian at the British Library. Its pages listed conferences, collections, exhibitions, reading suggestions, web articles and thousands of links to map image sites. Its stated purpose was to help users find free information about old maps, both online and in print.

As of 1 January 2026, the site has been discontinued and is no longer maintained. Its content remains accessible through copies saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine from 2003 onward. The author's own research results and material on Mediterranean portolan charts have been gathered together, and the author hopes this material can continue for a while.
