About nwg-look

nwg-look is an open-source GTK3 settings editor for Linux, designed to work in wlroots-based Wayland environments such as sway. It is part of the nwg-shell project and is influenced by LXAppearance. It applies gsettings directly, so users do not need Xwayland, extra environment variables, gsettings lines in the sway config, or the import-gsettings script. It provides command-line options for applying stored settings, restoring defaults, exporting config files, showing version information and debug messages. When the Apply button is used, it also creates a backup file, and it can export settings to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini unless the -n flag is used.

Some settings are compatibility-oriented. During export, nwg-look maps certain gsettings keys to similar Gtk.Settings values. Toolbar style, toolbar icon size, button images, menu images, event sounds and input feedback sounds are deprecated or may have no effect in non-GNOME environments. Installation may require build dependencies if the software is not packaged for the distribution.

Key features

  • Edits GTK3 settings natively in wlroots-based Wayland environments
  • Applies gsettings directly without Xwayland or sway config workarounds
  • Provides CLI flags for apply, restore, debug, version and export
  • Creates a backup file when the Apply button is used
  • Exports settings to gtk-3.0/settings.ini unless the -n flag is used
  • Maps some gsettings keys to similar Gtk.Settings values during export
Best for: Linux users on wlroots-based Wayland compositors such as sway who want to change GTK3 appearance settings without Xwayland workarounds.
Good for
  • Works natively on Wayland and does not require Xwayland.
  • Applies gsettings directly, so sway config gsettings lines and import-gsettings are unnecessary.
  • Open source under the MIT license.
Watch out for
  • Some settings are deprecated, ignored, or do not seem to change anything outside GNOME.
  • Some gsettings keys have no direct Gtk.Settings counterparts.
  • May require build dependencies such as go, gtk3, xcur2png and gsettings if not packaged.
