About short-video-maker

Short Video Maker is an open source tool for generating short-form videos from simple text inputs, targeting TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. It combines text-to-speech, automatically generated captions, background videos sourced from Pexels, and background music, then renders the finished video. The server exposes both a REST API and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, so it can be driven by scripts or by an AI agent, with example n8n workflows included in the repository. Voiceover generation is English only, background footage comes from Pexels, and running it generally requires internet access, a free Pexels API key, at least 3 GB free RAM, 2 vCPU and 5 GB disk space. It does not generate video from scratch from an image or image prompt.

Key features

  • Generates complete short videos from simple text prompts
  • Text-to-speech voiceover using Kokoro TTS
  • Automatic caption generation and styling via Whisper
  • Background video search and selection through the Pexels API
  • Background music with genre and mood selection
  • Serves both a REST API and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server
Best for: Developers and AI-agent builders who want a self-hosted, code-based way to turn text into English-voiced short videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Good for
  • Open source repository with the full source code available
  • Described as a free alternative to GPU-heavy generation and expensive third-party API calls
  • Ships Docker images and example n8n workflows for the REST and MCP servers
Watch out for
  • Voiceover generation only works in English because kokoro-js does not currently support other languages
  • Requires internet access, a free Pexels API key, and minimum hardware of about 3 GB RAM, 2 vCPU and 5 GB disk space
  • Does not generate video from scratch based on an image or image prompt

short-video-maker FAQ

What resources are needed to run it?
Internet access, a free Pexels API key, at least 3 GB free RAM (4 GB recommended), at least 2 vCPU and at least 5 GB of disk space.
Can it produce voiceovers in languages other than English?
No. The project can only generate videos with English voiceover, since kokoro-js does not support other languages at the moment.
How is the server typically started?
Docker is recommended, with three images for different use cases: tiny, normal and CUDA. The server then exposes REST and MCP endpoints for video generation.
