About urlify

urlify is a PHP library that converts non-ASCII characters into URL-safe slugs and transliterated text. It provides methods for URL slugs, file-name filtering, and plain transliteration, with language-specific maps and options to add custom character replacements and remove specified words.

It is installed with Composer and called from PHP code. Symbols without a transliteration can be omitted or replaced with a specified character.

Key features

  • Generate URL slugs from non-ASCII text via URLify::slug
  • Filter file names while preserving extension via URLify::filter
  • Transliterate characters without slug formatting via downcode
  • Prioritize language-specific transliteration maps, e.g. German or Turkish
  • Add custom character replacements with add_chars method
  • Remove specified words from slugs with remove_words
Best for: PHP developers who need URL slugs or transliterated file names from multilingual text.
Good for
  • Handles transliteration maps for many listed languages plus additional coverage via ASCII::to_transliterate()
  • Offers separate methods for URL slugs, file names, and plain transliteration
  • Supports custom character mappings and custom word-removal lists
Watch out for
  • Some symbols have no transliteration and are omitted or replaced
  • Installation and use described for PHP with Composer autoloader
