About Vim Plug

Vim-plug installs and manages plugins for Vim and Neovim. It is provided as a single plug.vim file placed in the autoload directory, with plugins listed between plug#begin() and plug#end() in the configuration file.

It provides commands to install, update, review changes for, and remove plugins, and supports branch, tag, commit, custom directories, on-demand loading, and post-update hooks. plug#end() enables filetype indent and syntax highlighting by default, which can be disabled afterward.

Key features

  • Install and update plugins in parallel using shallow clones
  • Load plugins on demand to reduce startup time
  • Specify branch, tag, or commit for a plugin
  • Run post-update hooks after install or update
  • Review changes and remove unused plugins with commands
  • Support for externally managed plugins
Best for: Vim and Neovim users who list and maintain plugins in their configuration file.
Good for
  • Single file with no dependencies
  • Compatible with Vim versions since 2006 and Neovim releases
  • Uses shallow clones to reduce disk use and download time
