About Webvm

WebVM is an open source project that runs a Linux virtual machine inside a web browser. Its repository hosts the source code for webvm.io. The environment is server-less and runs fully client-side using HTML5 and WebAssembly, and it runs an unmodified Debian distribution that includes many native development toolchains. It is powered by the CheerpX virtualization engine.

WebVM can connect to a Tailscale network, which is optional and requires a Tailscale account. Once connected, it can reach machines on that private network. Internet access requires an exit node on another device in the same Tailscale network. Some low-level networking operations, including ICMP used by ping, are not currently available, so curl or wget are suggested for connectivity checks. Users have root privileges by default, but sudo is not installed.

Webvm FAQ

How do I connect WebVM to a Tailscale network?
Open the Networking panel from the sidebar, click Connect to Tailscale, log in (a free Tailscale account can be created if needed), and click Connect when prompted.
Can WebVM access the public internet?
Yes, after an exit node is set up on another device in the Tailscale network. WebVM uses the exit node automatically once it is advertised.
Can I use ping to check connectivity in WebVM?
Not currently. Some low-level networking operations, including ICMP used by ping, are not available. The source suggests using curl or wget instead.
