About Aka Profiles

AKA Profiles is a Chrome browser extension that acts as a Nostr signer and supports multiple public and private key pairs. Its main purpose is to let web apps request event signing with a private key stored locally, so the private key does not need to be given to those apps. The extension also keeps a list of the user's public keys, which reduces copying and pasting keys into different apps. It is based on nos2x and uses the same app permission model.

Setup requires pasting a private key into the extension. Some features are marked as experimental in the project documentation. If an access request prompt does not appear, the project notes that other signer extensions, such as nos2x or Alby, may need to be disabled.

Key features

  • Stores multiple public and private key pairs in one Chrome extension
  • Signs Nostr events with a locally stored private key when apps request it
  • Keeps a list of public keys to reduce copying keys into apps
  • Supports signString() for signing message strings, excluding JSON objects
  • Most Recent Visits list shows recently used apps, toggled in Options
  • Exposes NIP-04 and NIP-44 encrypt and decrypt functions to web apps
Best for: Nostr users in Chrome who manage more than one key pair and use web apps that request signatures.
Good for
  • Web apps can request signatures without receiving the private key, according to the project description
  • Lets users keep several key pairs in one extension
  • Built on nos2x, with much of its underlying code reused
Watch out for
  • Described as a Chrome extension only
  • The private key must be pasted into the extension during setup
  • Other signer extensions, such as nos2x or Alby, may conflict and need to be disabled
