About Bostr

Bostr is a Nostr relay aggregator proxy that acts like a regular Nostr relay. It connects to multiple configured relays to exchange events on behalf of a client. The project aims to reduce bandwidth use for mobile users, since clients that connect to many relays often receive and send the same events repeatedly.

A Nostr client should connect only to a single Bostr relay. Running Bostr requires Node.js v20 or later, or the Bun runtime, along with a reverse proxy such as nginx or Caddy. The reverse proxy must set the x-forwarded-proto header to https. Development is now focused on bostr2, and future pull requests will be accepted only on bostr2. This repository will be merged into bostr2, which will deprecate the Node.js version.

Key features

  • Combines several configured Nostr relays behind one relay address.
  • Proxies multiple relays over a single socket connection.
  • Avoids forwarding the same event to the connected client.
  • Installs through npm, Git source, Docker, or the Bun runtime.
  • Generates a starter config file with the bostr makeconf command.
  • Accepts CLUSTERS and LOG_ABOUT_RELAYS environment variables for overrides.
Best for: Nostr users on mobile data plans, and operators who want to run a single relay endpoint for their Nostr clients.
Good for
  • Aims to reduce repeated event transfer, which is intended to lower mobile bandwidth use.
  • Open source project.
Watch out for
  • Requires a reverse proxy, such as nginx or Caddy, with the x-forwarded-proto header set to https.
