About Denostr

Denostr is an open-source, cloud-native Nostr relay hosted on GitHub. The repository title and description call it a Rust-based relay derived from nostr-rs-relay, while the README body describes a Deno-based TypeScript relay forked from nostream; the source does not reconcile those two descriptions. It is intended for operators who self-host their own relay.

Key features

  • Supports relay NIPs including NIP-01, NIP-05, NIP-11, NIP-42 authentication and NIP-45 event counts
  • Encrypted direct messages (NIP-04) and draft encrypted group chat with Megolm ratchet (NIP-38)
  • Optional paid admission via LNbits, LNURL providers or ZEBEDEE payment processors
  • Includes Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes and Tor deployment files
  • Also covers event deletion, expiration timestamps, proof of work and parameterized replaceable events
  • Requires Deno 1.30.x/1.31.x, MongoDB 4.4-6.0 and Redis (standalone optional, cluster required)
Best for: Operators who want to self-host a cloud-native Nostr relay, optionally with a paid admission fee.
Good for
  • Open source with a public repository, LICENSE file and 48 commits
  • Ships configuration, security and contribution documents alongside deployment files
  • Payment admission is configurable through three named processors: LNbits, LNURL and ZEBEDEE
Watch out for
  • Needs Deno 1.30.x or 1.31.x, MongoDB 4.4/5.0/6.0 and Redis, with Redis clustering required
  • The README architecture section is marked 'Todo', so internal design details are not documented there
  • The repository describes the implementation inconsistently as Rust-derived and Deno/TypeScript-based

Denostr FAQ

What does an operator need to run Denostr?
Deno v1.30.x or v1.31.x, TypeScript, MongoDB 4.4, 5.0 or 6.0, and Redis (standalone is optional, cluster is required). Kubernetes setups need v1.18.8 or later.
How is paid admission enabled?
Set payments.enabled and payments.feeSchedules.admission.enabled in .nostr/settings.yaml, set limits.event.pubkey.minBalance, choose lnbits, lnurl or zebedee as the processor, supply the matching API key or invoice URL, and restart the relay.
What should be checked before using a payment processor?
The quick start guides must be completed first. For LNbits, the instance must be reachable from the internet with a valid SSL/TLS certificate, and the demo server must not be used for production.
