About broadcastr

broadcastr is an open source Nostr relay written to receive events from one relay and transmit them to other relays. The repository describes it as a stateless alternative to blastr with added features. It is installed with cargo, either from crates.io or from the git repository, and runs as a command-line program that listens on a websocket address and is configured with relay lists and flags.

The program offers filtering and spam controls. Events can be limited by kind, author, and mentions, and spam filtering applies extra heuristics to events from strangers. By default it uses the azzamo.net service for spam filtering, which can be turned off with a flag. Rate limits per author, per IP address, and overall are configurable, and the defaults are documented in the usage notes. The source does not state whether any of these limits or filters are enabled by default beyond those noted.

Key features

  • Forwards Nostr events from a listening websocket to a configured list of relays
  • Filters events by kind, author, and mentions, with per-relay kind allow-lists
  • Applies additional spam detection heuristics to events from strangers
  • Subscribes to chosen authors and event kinds and distributes their events automatically
  • Does not transmit NIP-70 protected events by default
  • Connects to Tor onion relays through a SOCKS5 proxy
Best for: Operators of Nostr relays who want to forward events from one relay to other relays with configurable filtering and rate limits.
Good for
  • Released under both the Apache and MIT licenses, according to the license files in the repository
  • Relay discovery can draw on user profiles and NIP-66, and each method can be disabled with a flag
  • Rate limits and allow-lists are set through command-line options
Watch out for
  • Spam filtering uses the external azzamo.net service unless the --no-azzamo flag is set

broadcastr FAQ

How is broadcastr installed?
It can be installed with cargo install --locked broadcastr from crates.io, or with cargo install --locked --force --git https://github.com/codonaft/broadcastr from the git repository.
Does broadcastr send data to any outside service?
By default it uses azzamo.net for spam filtering. The --no-azzamo option turns this off. Relay discovery can also use user profiles and NIP-66, which can be disabled with their own flags.
