Boxxy
boxxy isolates misbehaving Linux applications and limits where they can place files.

About Boxxy
Boxxy is an open-source Linux utility that isolates misbehaving Linux applications and redirects their file read/write operations to user-specified locations, using Linux namespaces for functionality. It supports context-dependent path redirection rules, optional immutable filesystems outside specified rewrite paths, automatic home directory rule suggestions, project-local configuration files, .env file loading, environment variable injection via rules, daemon mode for background processes, and command-line rule passing. It is Linux-only, requires the newuidmap package (not preinstalled on all distributions), cannot run sudo inside its isolated environment, and is in early 0.x development with maintenance currently paused aside from accepting pull requests and reviewing issues.
Key features
- Redirects application file read/write paths to user-specified locations
- Supports context-dependent rules for different directories
- Optional immutable filesystem outside specified rewrite paths
- Scans home directories to suggest automatic path redirection rules
- Loads project-local boxxy.yaml and .env configuration files
- Injects environment variables via defined rules
- Uses Linux namespaces for low-overhead application isolation
- Supports context-dependent configurations that many apps lack natively
- Eliminates the need for symlinks to redirect application file paths
- Linux-only, cannot run sudo inside the isolated container
- Early 0.x development stage with no stability guarantees
- Primarily tested for the maintainer's personal use cases
