About RecoverPy

RecoverPy is an open-source terminal tool for Linux that scans raw partitions or disk images to locate remnants of deleted or overwritten files. It searches at the byte level for a string you supply, shows the disk blocks containing matches, and lets you move through adjacent blocks and save whatever content remains. It does not interpret filesystem structures, reconstruct files, or restore filenames, so results can be partial or fragmented, and recovery is impossible once the underlying blocks have been overwritten.

The scan opens the selected partition in read-only mode, works through it in fixed-size chunks with overlap, and records the absolute offset of each match. It is streaming-based and memory-bounded, so the full partition is never loaded into memory. Accessing raw block devices typically requires sudo, and the project advises avoiding writes to the target partition and unmounting it when possible.

Key features

  • Searches a partition or disk image for a specific string
  • Inspects the disk blocks where matches are found
  • Moves across adjacent blocks to recover fragmented data
  • Selects and saves useful content from blocks
  • Read-only, offset-based block reads on raw devices
  • Streaming, memory-bounded scan with chunk overlap
Best for: Linux users who need to inspect raw disk data from the terminal for fragments of deleted or overwritten files.
Good for
  • Open source under GPL-3.0 with a public repository
  • Opens the target partition in read-only mode
  • Streaming scan never loads the full partition into memory
Watch out for
  • Does not reconstruct files automatically or infer file boundaries
  • No filesystem interpretation or filename restoration
  • Raw block device access typically requires sudo, and overwritten blocks cannot be recovered

RecoverPy FAQ

What kind of search string works best?
A unique identifier, configuration key, or sentence fragment generally produces better results than common words.
What are the requirements to run it?
Linux with Python 3.9 or later. Accessing raw block devices typically requires sudo.
Does it restore filenames or rebuild files automatically?
No. It works on raw data and does not interpret filesystem structures or reconstruct files; results may be partial or fragmented.
