About Linux-Fake-Background-Webcam

Linux Fake Background Webcam is an open source Python repository for GNU/Linux that changes the background of a webcam feed. It can blur the background, replace it with an image or an animated background, and apply colour map and hologram effects. Processing can run on demand. The repository uses Mediapipe for image segmentation, which the maintainer reports significantly increased performance over the earlier BodyPix version, now kept in a separate branch. The maintainer reports at least 25 FPS on an i7-4900MQ processor.

The tool writes its output to a virtual video device, so video applications can select it as a camera. It depends on either v4l2loopback or akvcam being installed first. The README warns to read the Python package installation section carefully for Python 3.13 and above, including Debian 13 "Trixie".

Linux-Fake-Background-Webcam FAQ

Does the virtual camera stay available after a reboot?
Loading the module with modprobe applies only to the current session and does not persist past reboot. Running the v4l2loopback-install.sh script creates configuration files that load the virtual device on startup.
Why does the README say exclusive_caps=1 is needed?
The README states that the exclusive_caps=1 option is required for programs such as Zoom and Chrome.
What should I do if opening the webcam from Python gives an OSError with Errno 22?
The README suggests trying the latest version of v4l2loopback from its GitHub repository, because the version in a package manager may be too old.
