About G-Helper Linux

G-Helper Linux is an unofficial Linux port of G-Helper, a control utility originally written for Windows. It is used to manage settings on ASUS laptops, including fan curves, Aura RGB keyboard lighting, MUX and GPU modes, and battery charge limits. The project's README says it was built because asusctl does not cover most of the functionality the original G-Helper offers, and it is tested primarily on KDE. The author states that other desktop environments should also work.

The project also lists experimental support for some Lenovo models (IdeaPad, Legion, LOQ, and Yoga). That support covers performance modes, battery conservation, fan monitoring, power limits, and keyboard backlight through mainline kernel drivers. Power limit control requires kernel 6.17 or later. Switching to the Ultimate GPU mode, which sets the dGPU to drive the display directly, requires a reboot. The homepage states that the software has no telemetry, but this is a claim made by the project and is not independently verified here.

Key features

  • Custom fan curves with 8-point drag-to-edit for each fan
  • Battery charge limit adjustable from 40 to 100 percent
  • GPU mode switching across Eco, Standard, Optimized, and Ultimate modes
  • Per-key Aura RGB keyboard backlight control
  • Performance modes: Silent, Balanced, and Turbo
  • Undervolting controls for AMD Curve Optimizer and Intel MSR
Best for: Linux users who own a supported ASUS laptop and want direct control over fan curves, battery limits, and GPU mode settings.
Good for
  • Open source, with the code publicly available in the GitHub repository
  • Homepage states the project has no telemetry and no bloat
  • Covers a broad set of ASUS control features in one application
Watch out for
  • Unofficial port that is not produced by ASUS
  • Lenovo support is marked as experimental
  • Switching to Ultimate GPU mode requires a reboot

G-Helper Linux FAQ

Does G-Helper Linux support Lenovo laptops?
The project lists experimental support for IdeaPad, Legion, LOQ, and Yoga models. This covers performance modes, battery conservation, fan monitoring, power limits, and keyboard backlight through mainline kernel drivers. Power limits require kernel 6.17 or later.
Do GPU mode changes require a reboot?
According to the project's reboot table, switching between Eco and Standard usually does not require a reboot, though one may be needed if the GPU driver is active. Switching to Ultimate mode requires a reboot because the MUX switch takes effect only after restart.
