About Cline

Cline is an open-source AI coding agent. It can be used inside the VS Code editor, from a terminal through the Cline CLI, or embedded in other products through its SDK. The homepage also lists a standalone desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux that does not require an editor. Cline uses Plan and Act modes: Plan mode is used to agree on a strategy, and Act mode carries it out. In Act mode, the user can approve each step or turn on auto-approve.

Cline can make coordinated changes across multiple files, with diffs, checkpoints, and one-click undo on each step. It can run bash commands and respond to their output, which the homepage describes for tasks such as dev servers, tests, and deploys. It supports Claude, GPT, Gemini, local models through Ollama or LM Studio, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Users bring their own API key, endpoint, or model weights. Cline also supports MCP servers and repository-level rules in .clinerules. The homepage lists pricing as unknown, so cost terms should be checked directly with the project.
