About clipboard-history

Ringboard is a clipboard manager for Linux. It keeps a history of copied items, including images and arbitrary bytes, and the history persists across reboots. Users can search the history with Regex or raw queries. The project uses a client-server design, so different interfaces such as a command line tool, a terminal interface, or a graphical app can read and write the same clipboard data.

The software is Linux-only and requires a relatively recent kernel (version 6 or later). The quickest installation uses Cargo and a provided systemd script. A manual setup requires the server, an X11 or Wayland clipboard watcher, and a client of the user's choice. The project includes tooling to import history from Gnome Clipboard History, GPaste, and Clipboard Indicator.

Key features

  • Remembers clipboard history across reboots
  • Saves images and arbitrary bytes, not only text
  • Searchable history using Regex or raw queries
  • Client-server design lets apps read and write clipboard data
  • Works with X11 and Wayland clipboard watchers
  • Migration commands for Gnome Clipboard History, GPaste, and Clipboard Indicator
Best for: Linux users who want a persistent, searchable clipboard history and are comfortable installing software with Cargo or running manual setup steps.
Good for
  • Not tied to a specific desktop environment or framework, according to the project
  • Includes import tooling for several existing Linux clipboard managers
  • Described by the project as loading only the entries needed for display, which keeps memory use low
Watch out for
  • Linux only, and requires a relatively recent kernel (6 or later)
  • Manual installation requires separate server, clipboard watcher, and client components
  • On systems without a framework, the server and clipboard watcher must be started on boot manually
