About davincibox

davincibox is an open source Linux container that packages DaVinci Resolve and its required runtime dependencies, designed to simplify installation and operation of the video editing software on Linux. It is primarily intended for users of image-based atomic Linux distributions including Fedora Atomic Desktops, Bluefin, and Bazzite, but works on any Linux distro with Podman and distrobox or toolbox support. The project is not affiliated with Blackmagic Design. DaVinci Resolve Studio has only received limited testing with davincibox, and NVIDIA GPU support relies entirely on community troubleshooting. Older AMD GPUs (RX 5000 series and earlier) may not function with the included ROCm compute package, and the free version of DaVinci Resolve on Linux has limited codec support unrelated to the container.

Key features

  • Packages DaVinci Resolve and all required runtime dependencies in a container
  • Officially supports Fedora Atomic, Bluefin, and Bazzite Linux distributions
  • Compatible with any Linux distro that has distrobox or toolbox support
  • Preconfigures ROCm compute runtime for modern AMD GPUs
  • Preconfigures intel-compute-runtime for Intel GPUs
  • Includes a setup.sh script to simplify CLI-based installation
Best for: Users of image-based atomic Linux distributions who want to run DaVinci Resolve without manual dependency configuration.
Good for
  • Eliminates manual configuration of DaVinci Resolve runtime dependencies on Linux
  • Officially supports popular image-based Linux distributions out of the box
  • Preconfigures compatible GPU compute runtimes for AMD and Intel GPUs
Watch out for
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio has only limited testing with the container
  • NVIDIA GPU support relies on community troubleshooting with no official assistance
  • Older AMD GPUs (RX 5000 series and earlier) may not work with included ROCm

What Linux distributions are officially supported by davincibox?
Fedora Atomic (including Silverblue and Kinoite), Bluefin, and Bazzite are officially supported; other distros like Arch, NixOS, Debian and derivatives are community supported on a best effort basis.
What GPU compute runtimes are included for AMD and Intel GPUs?
AMD GPUs use ROCm, while Intel GPUs use intel-compute-runtime; rusticl is no longer included as it broke ROCm functionality.
What is required to use davincibox?
You need Podman, distrobox or toolbox, the latest DaVinci Resolve release from Blackmagic, and your host user may need membership in the render and video groups. The setup.sh script additionally requires lshw installed on the host.
