Conty
Easy to use unprivileged Linux container packed into a single portable executable

About Conty
Conty is an unprivileged Linux container packed into a single executable. It is designed to run applications, including games using Vulkan and OpenGL, on most Linux distributions. The repository is open source and is listed under Gaming > Steam Communities & Tools.
Running Conty requires fuse3 or fuse2 and coreutils or another POSIX-compliant set of basic utilities. The /tmp directory must allow file execution. The Linux kernel must be at least version 4.4, though 6.0 or newer is recommended, and it should support unprivileged user namespaces. Some distributions disable this feature by default, and Ubuntu 24.04 and later may need AppArmor settings changed. Ubuntu 25.04 and later may require disabling AppArmor entirely if a permission error occurs.
Key features
- Single executable that can be placed anywhere, including on a USB stick
- Compressed with squashfs or dwarfs, using less disk space than uncompressed containers
- Based on Arch Linux, with a default release that includes Steam, Lutris, and Wine-Proton-GE
- Can run 32-bit applications on pure 64-bit systems
- Supports Xorg, Wayland, and XWayland display systems
- Supports filesystem and X11 sandboxing using bubblewrap and Xephyr
- Root rights are not required to use it
- Applications run inside the container, so the host system does not need the packages installed
- Reported to work on many distributions, including older ones and those using musl instead of glibc
- Uses somewhat more memory because of compression and because container applications cannot share libraries with system applications
- Requires an unprivileged user namespace-capable kernel, which some distributions disable by default
- Ubuntu 24.04 and later may require changing AppArmor settings, and Ubuntu 25.04 and later may require disabling AppArmor
