About python-timbl

python-timbl is a Python extension module that wraps the TiMBL C++ programming interface, so functionality exposed through the C++ interface can be called from Python scripts. The project is a 2013 release by Maarten van Gompel, building on a 2006 release by Sander Canisius. According to the project, access to the API from Python makes it easier to prototype TiMBL-based applications.

The module offers two interfaces. A low-level interface in the timblapi module is close to the C++ library. A high-level, object-oriented interface in the timbl module provides a TimblClassifier class for training, testing, saving, loading and classifying. Users of the older library should note one backwards-incompatible change: scripts must import timblapi instead of timbl. Support is limited to Python 3, and Python 2 support has been deprecated since 2020. The software is free and distributed under the GNU General Public License. Users who publish research that uses TiMBL are asked to cite it.

Key features

  • Low-level timblapi module that closely follows the TiMBL C++ library
  • High-level TimblClassifier class for training and testing classifiers
  • Save and reload of trained instance base files
  • On-the-fly classification of feature vectors with optional class labels
  • Class distribution normalization enabled by default, can be turned off
  • Example script (example.py) included in the repository
Best for: Python developers who want to prototype or build applications on top of the TiMBL classifier.
Good for
  • Exposes all functionality of the TiMBL C++ interface to Python scripts
  • The high-level TimblClassifier class offers a simpler way to train and classify
  • Free software distributed under the GNU General Public License
Watch out for
  • Supports Python 3 only; Python 2 support has been deprecated since 2020
  • On macOS, prebuilt wheels are currently available only for Python 3.13
  • Without suitable wheels, installation compiles from source and requires TiMBL and Boost.Python

python-timbl FAQ

Which Python version is needed?
The project supports Python 3 only. Python 2 support has been deprecated since 2020.
What is needed if no prebuilt wheels are available for my system?
The package attempts to compile from source. TiMBL itself and Boost.Python must be built or installed on the system first.
Do I need to cite anything when using this module in research?
The project asks that publications of research using TiMBL cite TiMBL.
