About BRC

The Biological Records Centre (BRC) is a UK centre for recording of terrestrial and freshwater species, established in 1964. It works with the voluntary recording community, principally through national recording schemes and societies. It is supported by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and its work forms part of the National Biodiversity Network.

The site explains how biological recording works and how to get started. Visitors can read news from recording schemes, access published atlases, data and online resources, and learn about apps that support recording, including iRecord with image recognition for species identification. It also describes research that uses recording scheme data to study distribution trends and impacts of climate and habitat change.

The site suits volunteer observers, naturalists, members of recording schemes and societies, and researchers or others who use species distribution data for research, policy and conservation.
