About Fisheries and Oceans Canada Pacific Region Data Archive

The archive holds oceanographic data collected by Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Institute of Ocean Sciences and predecessor agencies. The bulk is vertical temperature and salinity profiles from water samples and CTD systems, plus chemical and biological profiles, moored instrument and buoy time series, coast station sea surface measurements, vessel track observations, meteorological observations and climate indices.

Coverage includes B.C. coastal waters and inlets, B.C. continental shelf waters, open ocean North Pacific waters, the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Archipelago, with holdings from the 1930s to present and little data before the mid-1950s. Files are stored by cruise and project in ASCII IOS HEADER format and are not directly accessible online; users must contact the Senior Analyst, and access in most cases requires a data use licence agreement and fee.

Key features

  • Vertical temperature and salinity profiles from bottle and CTD samples
  • Vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll and carbon
  • Time series from moored current meters, tide gauges, thermistor chains
  • Sea surface temperature and salinity time series from coast stations
  • Searchable header database by time, location and sampled parameters
  • Track observations of physical and chemical parameters at fixed depth
Best for: Researchers and analysts who need historical ocean measurements for B.C. waters, the North Pacific, the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Archipelago.
Good for
  • Holds multiple measurement types including oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll and carbon
  • Files use human- and machine-readable ASCII format that includes metadata
  • Searchable header database returns file pointers usable with IOS SHELL programs
Watch out for
  • DATA_LIBRARY is not directly accessible via the Internet
  • Access in most cases requires a data use licence agreement and fee
  • Holds little data from before the mid-1950s

Fisheries and Oceans Canada Pacific Region Data Archive FAQ

How do I find data in the archive?
Use the web-based searchable database of header information such as time, date, latitude, longitude and parameters sampled. It returns pointers to data file locations in the DATA_LIBRARY. For more complex queries, contact the Senior Analyst.
How do I get access to the DATA_LIBRARY files?
Contact the Senior Analyst to arrange access. In most cases this requires a data use licence agreement and fee. Data can then be used with your own programs or exported with IOS SHELL utilities to formats such as comma-delimited ASCII.
How should I cite the archive as a data source?
DFO (20xx). Institute of Ocean Sciences Data Archive. Ocean Sciences Division. Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. https://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/science/oceans/data-donnees/index-eng.html. Data obtained on 20xx-xx-xx.
