About Gifski

Gifski is a command-line GIF encoder built on libimagequant (pngquant). It converts video frames or a directory of PNG frames into animated GIFs, using cross-frame palettes and temporal dithering so each frame can use thousands of colors. It can also be compiled as a C library for use inside other applications.

Key features

  • Converts video frames or PNG sequences into animated GIFs
  • Cross-frame palettes and temporal dithering for thousands of colors per frame
  • Accepts piped YUV4MPEG input from ffmpeg
  • Width, height, quality, lossy-quality and motion-quality controls
  • Can be compiled as a C library for other applications
  • WebAssembly build support via wasm-pack
Best for: Developers and other users comfortable with a terminal who need to turn video or PNG frame sequences into animated GIFs.
Good for
  • Produces animated GIFs that use thousands of colors per frame
  • Installable via Homebrew or cargo, or downloadable from the releases page
  • Can be embedded in other apps through a C library API
Watch out for
  • Command-line only; the Windows and macOS GUI versions are separate
  • GIF compression limits mean smaller files come at a noticeable quality cost
  • The estimated output file size shown during compression is imprecise

Gifski FAQ

How do I convert a video to a GIF with Gifski?
Pipe ffmpeg output to gifski, for example: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -f yuv4mpegpipe - | gifski -o anim.gif -
Can Gifski use PNG frames as input?
Yes. A directory of PNG frames can be passed, for example gifski -o anim.gif frame*.png, though the wildcard will not work inside a quoted string.
How can I make the GIF file smaller?
Use --width and --height to reduce dimensions, or lower --quality. --lossy-quality and --motion-quality reduce size further, at the cost of noise, grain, smearing or banding.
