About Interpreter

Interpreter is a desktop screen translator for Japanese retro games. It captures text from a selected window, runs OCR, translates the text to English, and shows the result in a floating overlay with banner or inplace modes.

It is described as working offline after setup with local processing and translation caching. It requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later, macOS, or Linux, with at least 6 GB of free disk space, and has additional display and library requirements on Linux.

Key features

  • Captures text from any window running on the computer
  • Performs OCR using MeikiOCR trained on Japanese game text
  • Translates captured Japanese text to English
  • Shows translation in floating banner or inplace overlay
  • Caches translations with fuzzy matching to avoid re-translation
  • Places overlay on same display in multi-display setups
Best for: People playing Japanese retro games on Windows, macOS, or Linux who need English translations of on-screen text.
Good for
  • Works offline after setup without cloud APIs
  • Described as private because text stays on the machine
  • Offers banner and inplace overlay modes with multi-display placement
Watch out for

  • Linux setup may need input group membership and additional system libraries
  • On Wayland, inplace overlay works only with fullscreen windows
