About kunst

kunst is a daemon that extracts album art from songs playing in MPD and shows it in a small window. If a track has no embedded artwork, it tries to fetch the image from the internet.

It updates when MPD sends a player event rather than checking on a timer. Use requires MPD with dependencies including bash, ffmpeg, mpc, jq and sxiv, and settings such as size, position and music directory are set with flags or environment variables.

Key features

  • Extracts embedded album art from current MPD track
  • Fetches album art from internet when none embedded
  • Displays album art in a small window
  • Supports custom display size and screen position
  • Supports specifying MPD music directory
  • Offers silent mode to suppress program output
Best for: Linux users who play music through MPD and want to see the current track's album art.
Good for
  • Wakes on MPD player events instead of polling, idling at ~0% CPU usage
  • Falls back to internet download when embedded art is missing
  • Open source under MIT License
Watch out for
  • Works only with MPD playback
  • Requires dependencies including sxiv, bash, ffmpeg, mpc, jq and mpd
  • Install and use require command-line commands
