About Mactype

MacType is an open-source project that provides better font rendering for Windows by changing how text appears across the system. The current build adds Windows 11 and CET compatibility, an updated FreeType, color font support, a new installer, multi-monitor improvements and separate DirectWrite parameter adjustment, with Tray and Service modes available. Documentation, downloads and build instructions are hosted on GitHub.

Several limits are documented. Profiles should be backed up before upgrading, and on 64-bit Windows antimalware or antivirus software may conflict with MacType because it modifies running software; running in Service Mode or setting HookChildProcesses=0 are suggested workarounds. Windows 10 no longer allows enabling registry mode through the wizard, and Office 2013 does not work with MacType because it uses its own rendering.

Will MacType conflict with antivirus software?
On 64-bit Windows, antimalware or antivirus software may conflict with MacType because it sees MacType trying to modify running software. Possible workarounds are running in Service Mode (recommended) or adding HookChildProcesses=0 to the profile.
Does MacType work with Microsoft Office?
Office 2013 uses its own custom rendering rather than DirectWrite or GDI, so it does not work with MacType. Office 2010 (GDI) and Office 2016 or later (DirectWrite) are alternatives.
Can registry mode still be enabled through the wizard on Windows 10?
No. Registry mode can no longer be enabled via the wizard in Windows 10; the wiki provides a guide for enabling it manually.
