About Neodisk

Neodisk is an open source disk space visualizer for macOS and Linux. It scans a drive or folder and shows how space is used in treemap and sunburst views. The app is read-only: it never modifies or deletes files. The only file actions are Reveal in Finder (Show in Files on Linux), Open, and Copy Path. To remove anything, the user deletes it in a file manager.

The macOS app requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, on Apple silicon or Intel, and is available as a DMG or through Homebrew. The Linux app is a GTK 4 application distributed as an AppImage for x86_64 or ARM64, or built from source. It needs GTK 4.14 and libadwaita 1.5 or newer. The Linux app covers the core views, but the duplicate finder, the changes tab, cloud-drive scanning, and incremental rescans are macOS-only. On Linux, every rescan is a full scan. A Windows version is planned but not yet available. The project is licensed under GPL-3.

Key features

  • Treemap and sunburst views of disk usage, with keyboard navigation
  • Duplicate finder that verifies duplicates by content hash (macOS)
  • Age heatmap that colors the treemap by last-modified date
  • Changes tab listing files added, deleted, renamed, grew, or shrank since the previous scan (macOS)
  • Saved scan snapshots that reopen instantly
  • Fuzzy search across the entire scan, opened with ⌘F
Best for: Mac users on macOS 14 or later who want to see which files and folders take up the most disk space, using a tool that cannot change or delete files.
Good for
  • Read-only by design: the app never modifies or deletes files
  • Open source under the GPL-3 license
  • Native implementation on each platform, with a shared Swift core
Watch out for
  • Duplicate finder, changes tab, cloud-drive scanning, and incremental rescans are macOS-only
  • On Linux, every rescan is a full scan
  • Requires macOS 14 or later, and GTK 4.14 with libadwaita 1.5 or newer on Linux

Neodisk FAQ

Can Neodisk delete files?
No. Neodisk is read-only and never modifies or deletes files. Its only file actions are Reveal in Finder (Show in Files on Linux), Open, and Copy Path. Deletion has to be done in a file manager.
Which Linux systems are supported?
The Linux app needs GTK 4.14 and libadwaita 1.5 or newer, which are available on Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 40, Debian 13, and later. The AppImage bundles these libraries and needs a system as new as Ubuntu 24.04.
Is there a Windows version?
A native Windows app is planned, but the source does not give a release date. It is not available at this time.
