About Pixel Art Fixer

Pixel Art Fixer is an open-source tool that converts images which only imitate pixel art into true, grid-aligned pixel art. It runs on image processing alone, with no model required: several detectors estimate the pseudo-pixel grid an image was drawn on, and each detected cell is rebuilt as exactly one pixel at the resolution the art was meant to have.

It is built and maintained by Retro Diffusion and published as a GitHub repository containing Python and Rust components. The homepage also links to a browser version on Retro Diffusion that it describes as free with no install or setup. The project states that pure image processing cannot recover everything from a badly damaged image, and points to a neural version for the hardest inputs.

Key features

  • Three phase-invariant detectors vote on the underlying grid, with arbitration when they disagree
  • Handles non-integer cell sizes, sub-pixel drift, warped and non-uniform grids
  • Two-stage reconstruction separates cell placement from color to keep boundaries crisp
  • Adaptive color quantization sets structure; final colors come from original unquantized pixels
  • Rust core reported 11-24x faster than reference at 2.5-4x lower memory
  • Browser version on Retro Diffusion requires no install or setup
Best for: Developers and artists who need fake pixel art turned into editable, grid-aligned sprites or textures and want open-source Python or Rust code.
Good for
  • Targets cases fixed-grid tools miss, such as non-integer cells, drift, anti-aliasing and JPEG block artifacts
  • Uses multiple detectors plus a fused evidence stack rather than a single heuristic
  • Results are checked against a graded ground-truth benchmark, per the project description
Watch out for
  • The project states that pure image processing has limits on badly damaged images and points to a neural version for the hardest inputs
  • The repository listing shows two commits, so revision history is limited
  • Pricing for anything beyond the described browser tool is not stated

Pixel Art Fixer FAQ

Does it need a model or a local install?
No. The project describes itself as image processing only with no model required, and the browser version on Retro Diffusion is described as requiring no install or setup.
What problems in fake pixel art does it address?
Off-grid cells, non-integer cell size, anti-aliasing and mush, wrong stored resolution, and JPEG compression damage.
What is the availability and cost of the browser tool?
The homepage links to a browser version on Retro Diffusion and describes it as free; no other pricing information is given.
