About privateGPT

PrivateGPT is an open-source API layer for building AI applications on local models. It does not run models itself; instead it connects to any OpenAI-compatible inference server, such as Ollama, llama.cpp or vLLM, through the OPENAI_API_BASE setting. Any server that implements /v1/chat/completions and /v1/models can be used.

The API follows the Claude API model and provides building blocks including a standard messages API with streaming, async support and token counting, file and artifact ingestion, retrieval with citations and agentic RAG, built-in tools for web search, web fetch and code execution, custom tools and MCP connectors, and structured access to databases and CSVs.

A built-in workbench UI at /ui lets you test the API, send messages, upload documents, check retrieval citations and configure databases or connectors. The project describes the UI as a demonstrator rather than the core product, and developers are expected to build their own applications on the API. It suits developers and teams that want private AI features without depending on cloud APIs.

Key features

  • Open-source API layer for local-model AI applications
  • Connects to any OpenAI-compatible inference server via OPENAI_API_BASE
  • Messages API with streaming, async support and token counting
  • Retrieval with citations, agentic RAG, embeddings and orchestration
  • Built-in and custom tools, MCP connectors, text-to-SQL and CSV access
  • Workbench UI at /ui for testing, demos and inspection
Best for: Developers and teams who want to build private AI applications on local models and need an open-source API layer rather than a hosted cloud service.
Good for
  • Open source and works with any OpenAI-compatible inference server
  • Provides RAG, tools, MCP and text-to-SQL in one API layer
  • Can be installed on macOS, Linux and Windows
  • Lists integrations with Claude Desktop, Microsoft add-ins, n8n and OpenCode
Watch out for
