About Zenith

Zenith is an open-source terminal program for monitoring system resources on Linux and macOS, described by its author as similar to top or htop but with zoomable charts. It displays optional CPU, memory, network and disk usage charts, gives quick glances at disk free space, NIC IP addresses and CPU frequency, and includes a top-like filterable process table with per-process disk usage. It can highlight the heaviest users of CPU, memory and disk, change process priority, manage processes with signals, report battery charge state and power use, and retain performance data between runs.

NVIDIA GPU utilization metrics, including per-process GPU usage, are available when the program is built or installed with the nvidia feature; the minimum supported NVIDIA driver version is 418.56. Some capabilities depend on platform or privileges: delay accounting is available on Linux when running with root permissions. Docker support, ZFS pool status, AMD GPU utilization metrics, disk I/O ops and latency metrics, memory pressure support and sensor temperature charts are listed as planned rather than currently available.

Key features

  • Zoomable CPU, memory, network and disk usage charts with scroll-back in time
  • Top-like filterable process table including per-process disk usage
  • Highlight top users of CPU, memory and disk
  • Change process priority and manage processes with signals
  • NVIDIA GPU utilization metrics with per-process usage via the nvidia feature
  • Quick glances at disk free space, NIC IP addresses, CPU frequency and battery
Best for: System administrators and developers on Linux or macOS who want resource and process monitoring inside a terminal with chart views.
Good for
  • Open source, written in Rust, with 573 commits in the repository
  • Available through compiled releases, Debian/Ubuntu deb packages, Arch extra and AUR packages, Homebrew and Cargo
  • Performance data is saved between runs
Watch out for
  • GPU metrics are limited to NVIDIA GPUs and require the nvidia feature plus driver version 418.56 or later
  • Delay accounting requires root permissions and is Linux-only
  • Docker support, ZFS pool status, AMD GPU metrics and sensor temperature charts are listed only as planned

Zenith FAQ

Which platforms does Zenith run on?
Linux and macOS are the current platforms; BSD (OpenBSD/FreeBSD) and possibly Redox OS are listed as planned.
How do I enable NVIDIA GPU metrics?
Install or build with the nvidia feature (for example cargo install --features nvidia --git https://github.com/bvaisvil/zenith.git). The minimum supported NVIDIA driver version is 418.56, and the Makefile detects the NVIDIA driver on Linux.
What are the installation options?
Compiled releases, deb packages requiring Debian >= 9 or Ubuntu >= 16.04, the Arch extra repository, the zenith-git and zenith-bin AUR packages, Homebrew, or cargo install from the repository. Building requires Rust version 1.40 or newer and libclang development packages.
