About European Ocean Biodiversity Information System

EurOBIS is the European node of the international Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS). It publishes distribution data on marine species collected within European marine waters or by European researchers outside them. The site reports 1,541 datasets, of which 651 have a DOI, and 57,680,670 occurrence records. It also lists 221,991,676 extended Measurement Or Facts (eMoF) records.

Records are checked against quality criteria. A record passes when its taxon matches the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), the taxon is identified to genus or (sub)species level, and the latitude and longitude are valid and not zero. The site reports that 52,494,714 records, or 91%, have passed this quality control. When the data management team harvests a dataset without a DOI, it offers the data provider one. Before assigning a DOI, the team assesses the quality of the data and metadata, and archives the dataset in the Marine Data Archive. The site is managed by VLIZ and powered by LifeWatch Belgium.

Key features

  • Publishes distribution data for marine species in European waters or collected by European researchers
  • Checks occurrence records against WoRMS taxon matching and coordinate validity rules
  • Assesses dataset data and metadata quality before assigning a DOI
  • Archives DOI-assigned datasets in the Marine Data Archive for persistence
  • Lists recently added and updated datasets with record counts and metadata links
  • Lists species documented for the first time in EurOBIS, with maps and WoRMS links
Best for: Researchers and data users who need citable marine species occurrence data from European waters or from European researchers' collections elsewhere.
Good for
  • Records are checked against stated criteria, including WoRMS taxon matching and coordinate validity
  • Datasets with DOIs can be cited, and the DOI system helps identify specific dataset versions
  • DOI-assigned datasets are archived in the Marine Data Archive to support persistent access
Watch out for
  • Coverage is limited to European marine waters and European researchers' collections outside them
  • Not all datasets have a DOI: 651 of 1,541 are listed with one
  • About 9% of occurrence records are not reported as passing quality control

European Ocean Biodiversity Information System FAQ

What kind of data does EurOBIS publish?
EurOBIS publishes distribution data on marine species collected within European marine waters or by European researchers outside European marine waters.
How are records checked for quality?
A record passes quality control when its taxon matches WoRMS, the taxon is at genus or (sub)species level, latitude and longitude are not zero, and coordinates fall within valid boundaries.
Can a data provider get a DOI for a dataset?
When the data management team harvests a dataset without a DOI, it offers the provider one. The dataset first goes through a data and metadata quality assessment.
