About European Climate Assessment & Dataset project
The European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D) project publishes information on changes in weather and climate extremes, along with the daily observational data used to monitor and analyse them. It was initiated by the ECSN in 1998 and has received financial support from EUMETNET and the European Commission. As of the homepage, ECA&D receives data from 89 participants in 65 countries. The ECA dataset contains 106,283 series of observations for 13 elements at 25,919 meteorological stations across Europe and the Mediterranean. It also forms the climate data node of the Regional Climate Centre for WMO Region VI, a role it has held since 2010.
The site also hosts the E-OBS daily gridded dataset for precipitation, temperature, sea level pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and global radiation in Europe. The full E-OBS dataset covers 1950-01-01 to 2025-12-31. A new API endpoint provides access to non-blended station observations, with support for the blended dataset planned. Access has limits: 86% of the daily series can be downloaded from the website, and only for non-commercial research and education.
Key features
- Daily station observation series for 13 meteorological elements across Europe and the Mediterranean
- E-OBS daily gridded dataset for precipitation, temperature, pressure, humidity, wind and radiation
- API endpoint for non-blended station observations, with NetCDF or JSON downloads
- API queries for station metadata, time series retrieval and location-based observation lookup
- Demonstration repository with an interactive Jupyter notebook
- Data dictionary describing the daily data
- Covers a large number of stations and meteorological elements across Europe and the Mediterranean
- Offers programmatic access through an API and a demonstration notebook
- Serves as the climate data node for WMO Region VI, according to the homepage
- Only 86% of daily series can be downloaded from the website
- Downloads are stated to be for non-commercial research and education
- The API currently covers non-blended data only; support for the blended dataset is planned but not yet available
