About gdu

gdu analyzes disk usage through a console interface. It supports interactive and non-interactive scans, browsing of zip/jar/tar archives, exclusion filters, JSON export and import, and storage in SQLite or BadgerDB databases.

It is intended primarily for SSDs where it can use parallel processing. It also works on HDDs, but with smaller performance gain, and includes a sequential scanning option for rotating drives.

Key features

  • Browse zip, jar, and tar archives including compressed variants
  • Export scan results to JSON and import from JSON file
  • Store analysis in SQLite or BadgerDB database
  • Exclude directories, patterns, file types, and hidden directories
  • Run in interactive or non-interactive mode with depth control
  • Use sequential scanning mode intended for rotating HDDs
Best for: People who want to examine disk usage from the command line, especially on SSD systems.
Good for
  • Designed to use parallel processing on SSDs
  • Can run via downloaded binary or Docker container
  • Open source repository
Watch out for
  • Performance gain is smaller on HDDs than on SSDs
