About Scrutiny

Scrutiny is an open source hard drive health monitoring and dashboard tool designed to complement the existing smartd S.M.A.R.T daemon. It addresses key limitations of smartd, including its lack of differentiation between critical and informational S.M.A.R.T attributes, absence of historical metric tracking, reliance on generic manufacturer-set failure thresholds, and command-line only interface that is poorly suited for headless server environments.

The tool provides a web-based dashboard focused on critical drive health metrics, automatically detects all connected hard drives, and tracks S.M.A.R.T attribute trends over time. It uses real-world drive failure rates to set customized, more actionable alert thresholds, and includes temperature tracking and configurable webhook notifications for alerts. Scrutiny is distributed as an all-in-one Docker image, with manual installation also supported.

Key features

  • Web UI dashboard focused on critical S.M.A.R.T metrics
  • Integrates with the existing smartd daemon
  • Auto-detects all connected hard drives
  • Tracks S.M.A.R.T metrics for historical trends
  • Custom thresholds based on real-world failure rates
  • Configurable webhook alerts and notifications
Best for: It is best suited for system administrators and users running multi-drive servers, particularly headless setups, who want to proactively monitor hard drive health to prevent data loss.
Good for
  • Open source project
  • Works with existing smartd installations without replacement
  • Uses real-world failure data for more actionable alert thresholds
  • Includes a web UI for easy monitoring of headless servers
Watch out for
  • Marked as a work-in-progress with some rough edges
  • Docker setup requires manual device pass-through and capability configuration
  • RAID support depends on smartctl compatibility with the RAID controller
