About novideosrgb

novideo_srgb is an open source Windows tool for NVIDIA GPUs that calibrates a monitor to sRGB or another color space, such as Display P3, Adobe RGB or BT.2020. It converts colors on the GPU before they reach a wide gamut monitor, which limits the monitor's output to the chosen space. The clamp can be based on the monitor's EDID chromaticity data or on an ICC profile.

The tool relies on an undocumented NVIDIA API, supported on Fermi and later GPUs, so the clamp can sometimes break. The source states that the reported white point is ignored and the monitor is assumed to be calibrated to D65. When an ICC profile is used, it must not be loaded in Windows or other applications, because the color conversion is already done on the GPU.

Key features

  • Clamps wide gamut monitors to sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB or BT.2020
  • Uses EDID chromaticity data or ICC profile primaries for the clamp
  • Optional full LUT-Matrix-LUT gamma and grayscale calibration from ICC profiles
  • Per-monitor toggle for enabling or disabling the sRGB clamp
  • Configurable dithering and optional 8-bit color optimization disabling
  • Reapplies the clamp after display changes and HDR toggling while running in background
Best for: Owners of wide gamut monitors with NVIDIA GPUs who want to display sRGB or another defined color space and are comfortable with manual calibration settings.
Good for
  • Open source, with the source code available on GitHub
  • Can reapply the clamp automatically in the background, including after HDR is toggled in Windows
  • Supports ICC profiles with options for primaries only or full gamma calibration
Watch out for
  • Relies on an undocumented NVIDIA API, and the clamp can sometimes break
  • ICC profiles must not be selected or loaded in Windows or other applications
  • Disabling 8-bit color optimization improves 10-bit accuracy at the cost of 8-bit accuracy

novideosrgb FAQ

Does the color clamp persist through reboots and driver updates?
The source says the clamp should generally persist through reboots and driver updates, but it can break sometimes.
Which graphics cards are supported?
The tool uses an NVIDIA API supported on Fermi and later NVIDIA GPUs. AMD drivers have a hidden setting for this, but the source says NVIDIA does not provide one.
