About GOES Space Environment Monitor

The GOES 1–15 Space Weather Instruments page from NOAA NCEI provides historical space weather measurements from the Space Environment Monitor suite on SMS and GOES 1–15 satellites. It includes particle measurements, magnetic field readings, solar irradiance data, and images of the Sun recorded since July 1974.

The page organizes data by satellite with launch, first-data, last-data, and available-instrument listings, along with documentation and ephemeris sections. Use is affected by temporary NCEI cloud-migration access delays, gaps in irradiance and imaging data around the equinoxes, and possible data anomalies that require corroboration with other sources.

Key features

  • Magnetometer measurements from SMS and GOES satellites since July 1974
  • Energetic particle data from EPS, EPEAD, HEPAD, MAGED and MAGPD
  • Soft X-ray irradiance measurements from XRS sensors
  • Full-disk solar images from SXI starting with GOES-12
  • Extreme ultraviolet irradiance measurements from EUVS starting GOES-13
  • Satellite-by-satellite table of launch dates and instrument availability
Best for: Researchers and data users needing historical SMS and GOES 1–15 measurements of particles, magnetic fields, and solar output.
Good for
  • Continuous magnetometer, energetic particle, and soft X-ray data since July 1974
  • Covers SMS-1, SMS-2 and GOES 1–15 with per-satellite instrument listings
  • Provides documentation and contact information for data questions
Watch out for
  • Intermittent degraded order fulfillment during NCEI cloud migration
  • Irradiance and imaging data have gaps up to 80 minutes around equinoxes
  • Data may contain anomalies requiring corroboration with other sources

GOES Space Environment Monitor FAQ

What time period do the GOES 1–15 space weather records cover?
Magnetometer, energetic particle, and soft X-ray data are available continuously since July 1974 from SMS-1, SMS-2 and GOES 1–15. The 15 GOES satellites were launched between 1975 and 2020, with later instruments added over time.
Why are there gaps in the solar irradiance and imaging data?
Earth eclipses the Sun for a few dozen hours per year. These intervals appear as gaps of up to 80 minutes in irradiance and imaging data for about six weeks around the equinoxes.
Where can I get help with the data?
Use the contact information in the relevant readme files, or email [email protected].
