About Metastrip

MetaStrip is an open source web tool that removes hidden metadata from photos, PDFs, Office documents, video, and audio. According to its project description, the cleaning runs entirely in the browser. The source states that files are not sent to a server and that there is no upload or processing API. It removes items such as GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, author names, edit history, artist tags, and C2PA Content Credentials. After cleaning, it re-reads each file and reports any leftover metadata it finds.

The tool has stated limits. It supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, MP4, MOV, M4V, MP3, M4A, FLAC, and WAV files. TIFF, RTF, ODT, and Pages are listed as roadmap items. Batches are limited to 100 files and 750 MB in total. The site sends anonymous usage events to PostHog, which the source says contain file types and the kinds of metadata found, but not filenames, contents, or values.

Key features

  • Removes GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, and timestamps from photos
  • Strips C2PA Content Credentials and AI-generation markers from images
  • Removes author, edit history, and tracked changes from PDF and Office files
  • Removes artist tags, encoder signatures, and recording-device names from audio
  • Processes up to 100 files per batch, 750 MB total, with zip download
  • Re-reads cleaned files and reports leftover metadata instead of hiding it
Best for: People who want to remove hidden metadata from photos, documents, video, or audio before sharing them, and who prefer that the files stay on their own device.
Good for
  • The source states that cleaning runs in the browser and files are not uploaded to a server
  • The project is open source and its code is publicly available on GitHub
  • Cleaned files are checked again, and any leftover metadata is reported
Watch out for
  • TIFF, RTF, ODT, and Pages are on the roadmap and not yet supported
  • Pixel-level watermarks such as Google's SynthID are not removed by metadata stripping
  • Files over 300 MB skip the verification re-read

Metastrip FAQ

Are my files uploaded to a server?
The source states that files never leave the device and that there is no server, upload, or processing API. The site does send anonymous usage events to PostHog, which include file types and kinds of metadata found, but not filenames, contents, or values.
Does it remove AI watermarks such as SynthID?
No. The source says steganographic watermarks, such as Google's SynthID, are pixel-level and are not addressed by metadata removal.
What happens to very large files during checking?
A file over 300 MB skips the re-read after stripping, because reading it twice could run the browser tab out of memory.
