About procs

procs is an open source command-line tool that replaces the ps process-listing command. It is written in Rust and is listed in the System Utilities category. It lists running processes with colored, human-readable output and supports keyword search across multiple columns.

procs adds information that ps does not show, including TCP/UDP ports, read/write throughput, Docker container names, and additional memory details. It also offers watch mode and tree view. Support differs by platform: Linux and Windows are listed as supported, while macOS and FreeBSD are described as experimentally supported. On macOS and some Linux setups, normal users cannot see all process details, and running with sudo may be needed. Docker Toolbox on macOS is not supported.

Key features

  • Colored, human-readable process listing output
  • Automatic theme detection based on terminal background
  • Multi-column keyword search with AND, OR, NAND, and NOR logic
  • TCP/UDP port and read/write throughput columns
  • Docker container name column when the Docker socket is accessible
  • Watch mode and tree view
Best for: Developers and system administrators who work in the terminal and want a ps-style process list with additional details such as ports, throughput, and Docker container names.
Good for
  • Shows some process information that ps does not, such as ports and throughput
  • Installable through several package managers, including Homebrew, Arch Linux, Fedora, Scoop, and winget
  • Open source, with the code hosted on GitHub
Watch out for
  • macOS and FreeBSD support is described as experimental
  • Normal users cannot see some process details, and sudo may be needed for full information
  • Docker Toolbox on macOS is not supported because it does not use the UNIX domain socket

procs FAQ

Do I need sudo to see all process information?
On macOS, normal users cannot access information about other users' processes. On Linux, normal users cannot access some information, such as read/write throughput, for other users. Running with sudo shows this information.
Why do some listening ports not appear?
procfs permissions only allow identifying listening ports for processes owned by the current user. Not all ports show up unless procs is run as root.
How can procs be installed?
The source lists options including downloading a binary from the release page, Nixpkgs, snapcraft, Homebrew, MacPorts, the Alpine Linux and Arch Linux repositories, Scoop, Fedora, winget, RPM, and cargo install procs.
