About WindowsPowerShell

WindowsPowerShell is a public GitHub repository of PowerShell profile scripts and automation scripts for Windows. The repository holds the author's custom PowerShell profiles and scripts that configure a new machine and install commonly used apps and tools. The scripts can be copied into the Documents\PowerShell folder, or the repository can be installed with Initialize-Machine, which downloads it to Documents\WindowsPowerShell.

The repository includes a set of command scripts in the Modules\Scripts folder. These cover tasks such as clearing the Windows Event Log and temporary folders, converting between hex and BinHex values, converting .m4a audio to .mp3, and copying console output with its colors preserved. Installing the scripts requires loosening the PowerShell execution policy on new machines, and one script patches termsrv.dll to allow multiple concurrent RDP connections.

Key features

  • Initialize-Machine script that configures a new Windows machine and installs common apps and tools
  • Clear-Events and Clear-Temp commands for clearing the Windows Event Log and temporary folders
  • Connect-AwsLogin command that signs in to the AWS CLI using MFA for an IAM user profile
  • Conversion commands between integers, hex strings, BinHex strings, and RGB or ARGB values
  • ConvertTo-mp3 command, primarily used to convert .m4a audio files to .mp3
  • Copy-Console command that copies PowerShell console output with colors to a file, Word, or OneNote
Best for: Windows users who want to reuse, adapt, or borrow PowerShell profile scripts and new-machine setup automation.
Good for
  • Open source, with a LICENSE file included in the repository
  • Installation is documented, with options to run the setup script or clone the repository with Git
  • The Initialize-Machine script can be run multiple times without problems
Watch out for
  • Installation requires loosening the PowerShell execution policy on new machines
  • The Enable-MultiRdp command patches termsrv.dll, a Windows system file
  • The repository is described as the author's personal collection, so scripts may need adjustment for other setups

WindowsPowerShell FAQ

Can the Initialize-Machine script be run more than once?
Yes. The repository describes the script as re-entrant, so it can be run multiple times without a problem.
Do I need Git to install the scripts?
No. Initialize-Machine downloads the repository itself. If Git is already installed, the repository can be cloned manually instead. The repository can also be downloaded as a Zip file, in which case all files must be unblocked after unzipping.
