About Frogging

linux-tkg provides scripts to automatically download, patch and compile Linux kernel versions 5.4 and later. It ships with selectable patches for desktop use, including alternative CPU schedulers, NTsync and Fsync support, compiler and CPU-specific tuning, reduced module lists, and support for user-supplied patches. Options are set in customization.cfg, an external config file, shell environment variables, or the interactive install script.

Support for non-pacman distributions is described as experimental. Building recent kernels with GCC requires about 20-25GB of disk space, with higher needs when using LLVM/Clang, LTO, ccache or more drivers. Nvidia drivers may need patching for latest kernels, and systems without systemd require a specific config setting to avoid a non-bootable kernel.

Key features

  • Download, patch and compile Linux kernels version 5.4 and later
  • Toggle patches through customization.cfg file or interactive install script
  • Choose alternate CPU schedulers such as BORE, PDS, BMQ and MuQSS
  • Switch schedulers at runtime with sched-ext on kernel 6.12 and later
  • Add NTsync and Fsync support, including to older kernel versions
  • Tune compiled code for specific CPU and select GCC or Clang
Best for: Linux users who want to compile custom kernels with selectable patches and scheduler options.
Good for
  • Automates downloading, patching and compiling for kernel versions 5.4 and later
  • Allows toggling patches and scheduler choices through config file or interactive script
  • Supports user-supplied patches and kernel config options
Watch out for
  • Support for non-pacman distributions is described as experimental
  • Building recent kernels with GCC requires about 20-25GB of disk space, more with other build options
  • Nvidia drivers may need patching to build or work on latest kernels

What if my distribution does not use systemd?
Set _configfile="running-kernel" in customization.cfg, otherwise you might end up with a non-bootable kernel.
How are build options changed?
By editing customization.cfg, using an external config file, setting variables in the shell environment, or following the interactive install script.
