About JDSP4Linux

JDSP4Linux (JamesDSP for Linux) is an open-source audio effect processor that inserts effects into the audio pipeline for PipeWire and PulseAudio clients on Linux. It is a Linux port of JamesDSP, originally an Android audio effects processor, and is developed by Tim Schneeberger.

The application is designed for PipeWire, with PulseAudio supported only for backward compatibility; the PulseAudio backend is in maintenance mode and will continue to receive UI-related updates. Some capabilities, such as selective app exclusion and changing the target audio device, are available only to PipeWire clients. Installation options include a Flatpak package on Flathub, Arch Linux (AUR), Fedora/openSUSE, and building from source, with separate instructions for the PulseAudio version.

Key features

  • Automatic bass boost that analyzes the incoming stream to set its own parameters
  • Automated multiband dynamic range compressor
  • Interpolated FIR equalizer and arbitrary-response GraphicEQ
  • Partitioned convolver supporting mono, stereo and true stereo impulse responses
  • EEL2 scripting engine with auto-generated UI and minimal scripting IDE
  • AutoEQ database integration requiring a network connection
Best for: Linux users running PipeWire who want configurable system-wide audio effects and equalization.
Good for
  • Open-source codebase with a broad set of built-in audio effects
  • Designed for PipeWire, which has lower latency than PulseAudio for effect injection
  • Includes a programmable EEL2 scripting engine extended with DSP-related functions
Watch out for
  • PulseAudio support is backward-compatibility only and its backend is in maintenance mode
  • Advanced features such as selective app exclusion and target device switching are PipeWire-only
  • AutoEQ database integration requires a network connection

JDSP4Linux FAQ

Does JDSP4Linux work with PulseAudio?
Yes, but only for backward compatibility. The PulseAudio backend is in maintenance mode and will continue to receive UI-related feature updates, while more advanced support is planned for PipeWire clients only.
How can I check whether my system uses PipeWire or PulseAudio?
Run LC_ALL=C pactl info | grep "Server Name:" in a terminal. PipeWire shows output such as "PulseAudio (on PipeWire 0.3.35)"; PulseAudio shows "Server Name: pulseaudio".
How is the application installed?
For PipeWire, options include a Flatpak package on Flathub, Arch Linux (AUR), Fedora/openSUSE packages, or building from source. Installation instructions for the PulseAudio version are kept in a separate file.
