About JuiceFS

JuiceFS is a distributed POSIX file system released under Apache License 2.0 and designed for cloud-native environments. File data is persisted in object storage such as Amazon S3 (with local disk, private cloud object storage and HDFS also listed as supported media), while metadata is held in a compatible database engine such as Redis, MySQL, SQLite or TiKV. It provides POSIX, Hadoop, Kubernetes and S3 gateway interfaces, so existing applications and big data, machine learning and AI platforms can use the mounted storage without code changes. It supports shared access by many clients and strong consistency, meaning a confirmed modification becomes visible to all servers mounting the same file system. Throughput headroom depends on the size of the underlying object storage.

Key features

  • POSIX-compatible file system that existing applications can use without code changes
  • Hadoop Java SDK compatible with Hadoop 2.x and 3.x
  • S3-compatible gateway interface
  • Kubernetes CSI Driver for using JuiceFS in Kubernetes
  • Shared storage that can be read and written by thousands of clients
  • Data encryption in transit and at rest; LZ4 or Zstandard compression
Best for: Teams running cloud-native, big data, machine learning or AI workloads that need shared POSIX-style storage backed by object storage and a separate metadata engine.
Good for
  • Open source under Apache License 2.0 with the code hosted on GitHub
  • Separates data storage from metadata, supporting object storage, local disk, HDFS and metadata engines such as Redis, MySQL, SQLite and TiKV
  • Strong consistency: confirmed modifications are immediately visible on all servers mounted with the same file system
Watch out for
  • Requires both object storage and a separate metadata engine; it is not a self-contained storage appliance
  • Achievable throughput depends on the size of the underlying object storage

JuiceFS FAQ

Where does JuiceFS store file data and metadata?
File data is persisted in object storage such as Amazon S3, with local disk, public or private cloud object storage and HDFS also supported; metadata is persisted in engines such as Redis, MySQL, SQLite or TiKV depending on the scenario.
Can JuiceFS integrate with existing Hadoop and Kubernetes systems?
The Hadoop Java SDK is compatible with Hadoop 2.x and 3.x and components in the Hadoop ecosystem, and a Kubernetes CSI Driver is provided for using JuiceFS in Kubernetes.
Does JuiceFS support encryption or compression?
It supports data encryption in transit and at rest, and can compress data with LZ4 or Zstandard; configuration specifics are covered in the documentation.
