About UMU

UMU is an open source launcher for running Windows games on Linux. It is based on the Steam Runtime Tools and Steam Linux Runtime used for Proton, modified to work outside Steam.

The umu-run command takes a Windows executable path with arguments, plus optional WINEPREFIX, GAMEID, STORE and PROTONPATH values. It runs the game in Proton inside the runtime container, so games do not need to be in the Steam library and Steam does not need to be installed.

Key features

  • Runs Windows game executables with Proton outside Steam
  • Works without Steam installed
  • Accepts custom WINEPREFIX, executable path and launch arguments
  • Uses PROTONPATH or auto-downloads latest GE-Proton build
  • Applies game fixes using GAMEID from umu-database
  • Selects storefront context with STORE variable
Best for: Linux users who want to run Windows games from outside Steam using Proton.
