About Kextviewr

KextViewr is a macOS utility that displays all kernel modules (kexts) currently loaded by the operating system. For each module, it shows the collection (such as boot, system, or auxiliary), address, size, architecture, name, bundle ID, and full path. Apple's command line tool kmutil provides similar data, and KextViewr presents it in a graphical window with search, filtering, and export to JSON.

KextViewr supports macOS 11 and later for the current version, 2.0.0. An older version, 1.1.0, is available for earlier macOS releases. Because KextViewr uses kmutil to query the system, it cannot show any module that kmutil or kextstat does not report. The developer states that it is not designed to reveal advanced macOS rootkit kernel modules.

Key features

  • Lists all loaded kernel modules on macOS 11 and later
  • Shows collection, address, size, and architecture for each module
  • Marks Apple and third-party modules with an icon
  • Search box filters modules by name or path
  • Hashtag filters for Apple-only or non-Apple modules
  • Exports the module list as JSON
Best for: Mac users who want a graphical, searchable view of loaded kernel modules and a way to separate third-party modules from Apple's.
Good for
  • Provides a graphical interface with filter, search, and export options, which kmutil alone does not offer
  • The 'Show OS Kexts' checkbox hides Apple-signed modules, leaving only third-party ones visible
  • Single-purpose tool with a simple goal of displaying loaded kernel modules
Watch out for
  • Current version requires macOS 11 or later; older macOS versions need version 1.1.0
  • Only shows modules that kmutil or kextstat reports, so hidden modules will not appear
  • Not designed to reveal advanced macOS rootkit kernel modules

Kextviewr FAQ

Which macOS versions does KextViewr support?
Version 2.0.0 supports macOS 11 and later. For older versions of macOS, the developer provides version 1.1.0.
How can I show only third-party kernel modules?
Uncheck the 'Show OS Kexts' option on the right side of the window, or use the #nonapple hashtag filter in the search box.
Will KextViewr show modules that are hidden from kextstat?
No. KextViewr uses kmutil to get its information, so a module that is not shown by kextstat, or is actively hiding from it, will not be shown by KextViewr either.
