About AltSnap

AltSnap is a maintained continuation of Stefan Sundin's AltDrag, a Windows utility that lets you move and resize windows by holding the Alt key and clicking anywhere on the window, instead of aiming at a title bar or border. This drag behavior is common on Linux distributions.

The fork targets Windows NT 4 through Windows 11, though it is mostly tested on Windows XP and Windows 10. It removes the original Hooks windows feature, which had required injecting a DLL into every application; this version injects nothing into other applications, so a separate 32-bit and 64-bit build is not needed. The focus-on-typing feature was also dropped. Added options include transparent window dragging, a Maximize action, pause process options, and more blacklists, with some settings reachable only by editing the AltSnap.ini file. Documentation is available via the project wiki, but the original AltDrag documentation is noted as not fully accurate for this fork. The repository reports that VirusTotal sometimes flags builds, usually via SecureAge APEX, and states these are false positives.

Key features

  • Move windows by holding Alt and clicking anywhere on the window
  • Resize windows with the same Alt-drag behavior
  • Transparent window dragging option
  • Maximize action available as an added option
  • Pause process options
  • Additional blacklists for finer control of AltSnap
Best for: Windows users who want Linux-style Alt-click window moving and resizing without precise clicking on title bars or borders.
Good for
  • Injects nothing into other applications, so 32-bit and 64-bit systems do not need separate versions
  • Adds options over the original AltDrag, including transparent dragging, Maximize action, pause options and blacklists
  • Fixes numerous bugs and undesired behaviors from the original AltDrag
Watch out for
  • The Hooks windows feature was removed, so window snapping while dragging normally is not available
  • The focus-on-typing feature was disabled
  • VirusTotal alerts, usually from SecureAge APEX, are reported and described by the project as false positives

AltSnap FAQ

Do I need a different version for 64-bit Windows?
No. Because this version injects nothing into other applications, you do not have to worry whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.
How do I reach options not shown in the settings dialog?
Some options are only available by editing the AltSnap.ini file, which you open by middle-clicking the tray icon.
Why do some antivirus tools flag AltSnap?
The repository states that VirusTotal alerts, usually from SecureAge APEX and sometimes other vendors, are false positives.
